Transparency International is pleased to welcome Michiel van Hulten as the Director of its EU office in Brussels. Michiel brings over 20 years’ experience of EU policy, campaigns and communications to the team and will be leading the team’s efforts to strengthen transparency and integrity at EU level. Michiel will start in his new role on 1 September 2019.

Patricia Moreira, Managing Director of Transparency International said: “We are delighted to welcome Michiel as Director of TI’s EU Office. Throughout his career he has worked to advance the cause of good governance, democracy and anti-corruption, and he brings to the role both extensive experience and a track record that will help push issues of corruption to the top of the agenda in the institutions of the EU.”

Prior to joining Transparency International, Michiel has been working as a consultant in Brussels. He was the first managing director of VoteWatch Europe, the organisation that monitors the decision-making processes of the EU institutions. He brings extensive experience of the institutions themselves to the role. From 1999 to 2004 he was a Member of the European Parliament, where he served on the Committee on Budgetary Control, and before that he was an official with the Council Secretariat.

Throughout his career, Michiel has specialised in issues around democracy, transparency, accountability and citizenship, issues that form the cornerstones for our organisational mission both in Brussels and beyond.

Michiel said: “I am thrilled to be joining Transparency International as Director of its EU Office. TI is the leading non-governmental voice in the global fight against corruption and a respected actor on the EU stage. The start of a new political term in Brussels provides a real chance to strengthen the EU’s resolve when it comes to defending the rule of law at home and leading the fight against corruption globally. I look forward to leading the work of the TI EU team in making sure that happens.”

TI would like to thank Carl Dolan, who served as Director of the EU office for five successful and transformative years. Sincere thanks are also extended to Nick Aiossa who has been serving as Interim Director during the transition.
